Our History

Initiative – Trendsetter in Intelligent Food, was born in June 1998. It was greatly influenced and inspired by the legacy of our late grandfather, Gajendra Nath Mohapatra, who set up two restaurants in Kolkata during the British Raj. The first, Delphian Grill, served European cuisine at what is now known as Exide House near Esplanade and the second, The Red Pot, was located beside Mitra Cinema Hall in north Kolkata.

Our founder, Rumki Mahapatra, has carried forward this family legacy. As a leading Bengali woman entrepreneur in the Kolkata food scene, Rumki and her “Initiative” continually garnered media attention. We were featured by several leading dailies and magazines, including Femina and The Telegraph.

From humble beginnings, we quickly grew and evolved into one of Kolkata’s premier catering and event management companies. Our regular clientele included reputed organisations like –

  • Indian Museum
  • Rotary Dist 3291
  • BNR Club
  • Alkem Laboratories Ltd
  • Saraswaty Press Ltd
  • Electro Medical & Allied Industries Ltd
  • Press Club Calcutta
  • Indian Institute of Public Administration
  • Institute of Health & Family Welfare Government of West Bengal

As a noted chef and food writer, Rumki also contributed regularly to food & lifestyle columns of Sananda, Chatusparni & Bartaman. She was often invited as a guest chef and entrepreneur at television shows – such as “Sopan”, “Mixed Bag” & “Nadinir Ranna Ghar” on ETV & “Nari” on Alpha Bangla – and as a judge for cooking competitions.
